Bali Trip Nov 2013: It's all about spicy cuisines and casual eating!

Bali is known to many for it's beaches, sunsets, sunrise, relaxation, spa, etc. But my trip to Bali this time with a group of Indonesian friends are more about getting to know the culture, visiting historical places and of course EATING. Here are photos of some of the interesting food I tried while in Bali.

Dinner on Day 1 @ Nasi Pedas Ibu Andika

The dishes served here taste really fantastic. Simple to look at but it's all packed with enough ingredients / spices. Famous for their chilli sauce. So I took fish, otah, shredded chicken and fried fermented beancurd. Cost only Rp24,000 (USD2.10). The stall is located opposite of a Muslim cemetery. Don't worry, it's a busy street. It's safe to visit this place at night. They are open 24 hours.

Lunch on Day 2 @ Bebek Tepi Sawah

My first try on duck meat! I really love this restaurant. It features nice scenery. There is a paddy field and you can see cute ducks as well. Though it looks like a high-end restaurant, you eat casually there - with hands!! The duck tasted so good - crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. The chilli / onions served with the dishes tasted so good, I can't forget its taste!

Lunch on Day 3 @ Mertha Sapi

Simple food are always the best food. Here is rice served with vegetables, peanuts and fish sate. See the different sticks used on the sate? They represents different types of fish. I really love this and how I wish I can eat this everyday.

Lunch on Day 4 @ Laka Laka Bali

My last lunch in Bali. This restaurant looks small from outside, but once you are in - you'll find that it's built on a massive plot of land. There are so many pavilions inside which consist of private dining areas. There's a huge paddy field there, ponds and many decorative elements within this restaurant compound. You can do sight seeing here and take great photos too. Once again, I couldn't resist temptation of Crispy Duck served with Rice after the first try at Bebek Tepi Sawah, so I'm eating this again at Laka Laka. All I can say is - Ducks, I will really miss you...

Keripik Maichi (Maichi Tapioca Chips - Chilli Flavour)

Best chips ever! I can only take Level 3. Level 5 & 10 are just too HOT!! Available in Bandung or if you are Bali, you can get these at Circle K Mart. Cost: Level 3 & 5: Rp.21,500 (US$1.9), Level 10: Rp.24,000 (US$2.1).

We were on our trip to watch a funeral ritual of the royal family at Ubud when we came across ladies selling this on the streets. This is the beans they use to make TEMPE (fermented beancurd) in Indonesia. It's nice to eat this raw too.

Indobox @ Jem

Cuisines we tried at Indobox JEM

I always love Indonesian food because it's rich flavour. My favourite place is Singapore has always been Bali Thai. This time we decided to try Indobox. It's managed by the same company. Just that Indobox is more casual eatery as compared to Bali Thai. We paid about SGD40+ for all these including drinks which are not featured in the above photograph.

Pulut Kuning (Yellow Glutinous Rice) w/ Prawn Rendang

My favourite dish ever is this traditional Malay dish - Pulut Kuning (Yellow Glutinous Rice) served with Prawn Rendang. Rendang is a common dish always served in Indonesian and Malay restaurants which is rich with spices. Main ingredients that make it special is the grated, toasted and grinded coconut. That's for the sauce. The ones you can commonly find is Beef or Chicken Rendang. For me, I prefer Prawn Rendang. This is only available at my kitchen though, made by mum dearest!
